An area indeed rich in medieval history.

Bagnault is centred on the old route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and was thus a major overnight stopover point for the travellers. The Knights Templar were active in the region guarding the pilgrims against bandits and thieves and ensuring their safety on this leg of their journey down through France. Many of the buildings in the village originate from the hostels in which the pilgrims stayed overnight.

A beautiful medieval village on the Route du Chabichou - a gastronomique route of 200 km devoted to goats cheese dairies, organic farms and producers. The area is famous for Pineau des Charentes, the delightful aperitif; tastings are available at the many local producers or for something a little stronger visit Cognac!

There are countless walks and cycle tracks with a wealth of wildlife and nature to explore. The area is charming and well worth exploring for yourself. Bagnault and its neighbouring village Exoudun has been awarded the status of "cite de caractere en Poitou-Charentes" only given to the most picturesque villages in the region.

Vist the nearby towns of La Mothe St Heray (7 minutes away and your nearest shops), Lezay and St Maixent l'Ecole to experience the local way of life and sample the unique weekly markets selling everything from sun hats to garlic!

The Tumuli de Bougon are thought to have been constructed 2000 years before the Pyramids at Giza -- that is during the 5th to 6th century BC. The five tumuli and the further long low earthwork which divides the site into two pieces are considered to be architectural masterpieces of the period! This site can be found just 10 minutes from Bagnault.
